Cross cutting

This is where we cut from the action in one sequence at a point where that action has reached a high level of drama and high stakes, to a completely different scene of action. The reason why the cross cutting technique is used is to leave the audience in suspense about what happens next in the scene cut away from. This raises both tension and suspense as the audience actively imagines possible scenarios.

  

An example of cross cutting can be from the film Inception as in this scene it cuts from one actions cne that is happening on the road to another action scene that is taking place inside a building.
